What is a parenting agreement?

A parenting agreement is a legally binding agreement that advise the father and mother as to their rights and the procedures as it relates to child custody and the parenting of the child(ren).

Another term for parenting agreement is parenting plan. Most states such as Virginia, Maryland & Massachusetts favor parenting plans.

States such as Virginia, Maryland & Massachusetts favor parenting plans because parenting agreements eliminate disputes. Whenever, an agreement is clearly spelled out as to the custody of the child and rights of the respective parents are clearly spelled out, a lot of the confusion is eliminated.

If either parent in Virginia, Maryland or Massachusetts breaks the parenting agreement, then the other parent will have clear proof that the agreement was violated. Also, parenting agreement can be incorporated into the marital separation agreement ( property settlement agreement).
